Curl up with Calico! ABDO launches fun chapter book imprint

by Dan Verdick, ABDO Publishing Group

Young readers can curl up with a good chapter book--and some cute, crazy characters--in two new series just published by Calico Chapter Books, the latest imprint from Magic Wagon. Magic Wagon is the name of a new publishing division of the ABDO Group that was launched last year. Each chapter book in the new imprint features illustrations throughout and is printed on the highest quality acid-free white paper with reinforced library binding.

The first two series cover everything from fairy-tale magic happening right at your own school to the endless amount of trouble and fun you can have trying to improve yourself. Here’s some more information about what your readers will love when they curl up with Calico:

“Almost” rules with this funny heroine

Know any Almost-Empresses? These episodes feature the “sassitude” and “flip-flop belly dropping problems” of third-grader Katharine Carmichael, AKA Katharine the Almost Great. A self-described “work-in-progress,” Katharine is convinced that if she’d stop blabbing super-duper secrets to her cousin Crockett, conquer her stage fright-itis, and somehow come up with the winning idea for the character education service project, her parents would finally crown her Katharine the Great.

Young readers will laugh along and relate to these entertaining stories, and the character’s wit and attitude about life’s daily struggles. Plus, they’ll discover how even if you’re almost great, if you’re like Katharine, you can still rule.

Fiona & Frieda's Fairy-tale Adventures

Meet Fiona and Frieda, two friends who love fairy tales “more than summer, more than cotton candy, more than nail polish, and even more than secret friendship codes.” The two fairy-tale fans and friends turn into school-aged conjurers when they discover they can make up rhymes that bring storybook characters into their real lives. And just like with real fairy-tales, the duo’s original plans have some unintended consequences.

Whether it’s when Cinderella goes with them to the bowling alley to try on bowling shoes, or when they’re with Rapunzel stranded high atop a carnival ride (instead of her usual castle tower), readers will love the fun and puns taken from the original story, and the thrill of what might happen if the characters can’t get back to the real fairy-tale where they belong.
