Archie's War
by Marcia Williams
Marketed for an audience of 8-12-year-olds, this title is also a perfect picture book in comic format that provides a witty and stylish introduction or closing to a high school study of World War I. Williams has created a highly imaginative scrapbook of the Great War. It's Archie's book. He's a 10-year-old English boy who fills pages and pages with comic, color illustrations that depict his thoughts, observations, and feelings, along with newspaper headlines, foldout attached letters, postcards, and copies of photographs related to the war. Readers clearly see the profound effect of war on his entire family--something a textbook could never portray. War dehumanizes. Archie's War humanizes. This is highly recommended for all school libraries.--JW
