Releases through the end of the year will be fast and furious. I'll mention just a few of the titles highlighted in the October newsletter, but look forward to several blockbusters and critically acclaimed films to make their way to DVD before the end of 2009.

The Vatican enlists Robert Langdon to prevent its destruction at the hands of the Illuminati. Langdon and Italian scientist Vittoria Vetra race against the clock to uncover the clues leading them to the ticking time bomb in Dan Brown's Angels and Demons. In Funny People, famous comedian George Simmons learns he has an incurable blood disease and he befriends fledgling comedian, Ira, to make amends for his own shallow, professional life. The Hangover follows the hilarious adventures of three groomsmen in a desperate search for the groom after a wild night in Vegas. The lives of Julia Child and a young American wife are intertwined in Julie & Julia, a smart comedy about relationships and food. The summer theatrical blockbusters, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Terminator Salvation, are fall's DVD releases. Both films are action-packed sequels to their action-packed predecessors and sure to please.

Two titles shine in the independents. Director Lance Hammer debuts his extraordinary film of poverty, loneliness, and hopelessness that poignantly joins the lives of the three main characters in Ballast. Robin Williams portrays Lance Clayton, a man whose second chance at happiness stems from tragedy, in the dark comedy World's Greatest Dad.

In the foreign film arena… The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the backdrop for Lemon Tree; Israeli director Eran Riklis's story puts a human face to the chasm between the borders. Salma, a Palestinian struggles to defend her livelihood when an Israeli government minister moves next door to her lemon grove. And Locked-In Syndrome is director Jean-Jacques Beineix's documentary of Jean-Dominique Bauby, editor-in-chief of French fashion magazine ELLE, and his struggle to write The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

For the family I will mention--in quick succession--the highly anticipated sequels Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Whew! But there's more… Mandie and the Secret Tunnel is the first feature-length movie based on the Mandie books written by Lois Leppard. And Bill Nye hosts the series that explores where all our stuff comes from, where it goes when we're through with it, and how it all affects our lifestyles and the planet in Stuff Happens with Bill Nye.

Lastly, I cannot forget to include The Cove. Richard O'Barry, Flipper's trainer-turned-dolphin activist, and a team of marine specialists, high-tech experts, and experienced divers investigate the fate of dolphins slaughtered off the coast of Japan. Into the Storm, the continuing the story of Winston Churchill (The Gathering Storm) offers an intimate look at the making of a nation's hero, when Churchill was at his most commanding and effective. And, for music lovers comes Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... Season 1, a forum for in-depth discussion and performance with the most interesting artists and personalities of our time hosted by Elvis Costello and produced by Elton John.
