The Dead Hour
By Denise Mina
Highbridge Audio
Abridged on 6 CDs
Paddy Meehan is a few pounds overweight, under-appreciated at her job, single, and the sole financial support for her family with whom she lives. It's the early 1980's, the Thatcher years, and Paddy's not living the life she'd hoped for herself. Relegated to the night shift, she works for The Glasgow Daily News writing copy that's usually about auto accidents--not exactly cutting-edge reporting.
One night while driving around looking for a story, Paddy and her driver hear a call go out indicating a disturbance in a wealthy neighborhood. They jump on it. When they find a police car parked in front of the home, the policemen preparing to leave, Paddy almost chalks the scene up to yet another domestic disturbance. When she goes to the door to question the inhabitants, she is immediately met by a sharp-dressed man keen on persuading her to keep the story out of the press. Behind him, in the hallway, Paddy sees a woman--she is injured and frightened but somehow unable to take this opportunity to leave. The man at the door presses money into Paddy's hand and shuts the door before she can return the bribe, and Paddy is left to return to the car.
Paddy knows that something is not right.
The day next Paddy's suspicions are realized when a big story breaks on all the news channels and papers: the very woman Paddy saw the night before has been found murdered in her home.
Overcome with guilt, Paddy is determined to get to the bottom of the story. She finds that the police are steering the investigation towards another suspect, rather than taking time to track down the man who answered the door, the man who wanted to keep the story out of the papers. Soon, Paddy finds herself wrapped up in a plot that involves bad cops, a menacing thug, drug smuggling, a dysfunctional family, and a suicide victim--all while her personal life is falling apart.
Don't miss this second mystery in the Paddy Meehan series, narrated once again by Heather O'Neill. There's no one else who could do the job as well.--Linda Arrington Lusk, Product Marketing Manager
