San Diego's annual Comic-Con has become a haven for Hollywood studios to present their upcoming slate of films and television shows, much like the Video Software Dealers Association annual convention did back in the day. Over the course of four days, they preview snippets of upcoming films and television including the animated films 9 (2009), Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010), Astro Boy (2009), Disney's 3-D A Christmas Carol (2009), Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009), Dante's Inferno (2011), Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo (2009), The Princess and the Frog (2009), Shorts (2009), Toy Story 3 (2010), Tron: Legacy (2011), and Where the Wild Things Are (2009). Sci-fi, fantasy, action-figure, and horror features include Book of Eli (2010), The Box (2009), District 9 (2009), GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), Jonah Hex (2010), Legion (2010), New Moon (2009), A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), and Sherlock Holmes (2009). And a handful of new television series will also be introduced, or in the case of the first title on this list, actually fully previewed. That list includes Batman: The Brave and the Bold, FlashForward, Human Target V, Past Life, Prep and Landing, The Vampires Dairies (L.J. Smith), Middleman: The Complete Series, and Stargate Universe. And that's just the movie category. The rest of the show is chocked full of seminars tied to video games, comic books & graphic novels, webcomics, workshops, special appearances--like Johnny Depp (swoon)--and a full day devoted to kids. Think Nickelodeon! Upcoming video releases seem dwarfed in comparison to Comic-Con's slate, but the films and television of today are the DVDs and Blu-rays of the near future. Before you know it, they will be included in this segment, so let me get on with mentioning those titles in brief. I'll start with the critically acclaimed drama American Violet, a true account of racial discrimination where the victim does not back down. Completely fictional, Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell takes you back to the good old Evil Dead, Army of Darkness days where "wickedly funny and diabolically gross" (LA Times) go hand in hand. On the lighter side, Easy Virtue stars Ben Barnes as a young Englishman who marries an American divorcée (Jessica Biel) and then must return home to face his family. For the kids, animated feature Monsters vs. Aliens, television's Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning, and the popular Disney Channel series Jonas: Rockin' the House, starring the Jonas Brothers is a nice sampling of what's to come. There are two excellent foreign films, Rudo y Cursi, Carlos Cuarón's dark comedy about two brothers' rivalry, and Sin Nombre, a thrilling story of a young Honduran woman and a teenage Mexican gang member on a perilous journey of freedom. Trouble the Water, nominated for Best Documentary Feature, 2008 Academy Awards, takes you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen, in a redemptive tale of self-described street hustlers who become heroes. I'm not sure I even need to mention these two new TV seasons, because for those of you who are fans, you already know 30 Rock: Season 3 and The Office: Season Five are on their way to DVD. I know these two will make it to our family collection. All of these titles and many more are included in our monthly Video News newsletter.
