The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
read by Paul Boehmer, Susan Duerden, Rosalyn Landor, John Lee, and Juliet Mills

The island of Guernsey was occupied by the Germans during World War II; some citizens caught out after curfew invented a literary society to avoid suspicion. Later, a writer in postwar Britain searches for the topic of her next book while exchanging letters with the residents of Guernsey, and those letters comprise this enjoyable tale. It can take a little while to get into the rhythm of an epistolary novel, but the characters' voices are funny, poignant, outrageous and thoughtful, and the listener can't help but get caught up in their individual dramas. Ultimately, this work will resonate with many, a joy and a delight for those who love books, those whose lives are changed by books, and those who understand the power of books to keep themselves sane.
