This issue we step away from the usual and begin this column with the biggest release of the third quarter, and it's not a video, but rather, the video game that has been on everyone's lips since it's announcement at E3 in early June. That's right, The Beatles: Rock Band is releasing on Xbox360, Wii, and PlayStation 3 on 09/09/09 (of course). This coincides with the release of the entire collection of remastered Beatles albums. The Beatles: Rock Band is an unprecedented, experiential progression through and celebration of the music and artistry of The Beatles. The game will allow fans to pick up the guitar, bass, mic, or drums and experience The Beatles’ extraordinary catalogue of music through game play that takes players on a journey through the legacy and evolution of the band’s legendary career. In addition, The Beatles: Rock Band features a limited number of new hardware offerings modeled after instruments used by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr throughout their careers . There's nothing sadder than the death of an icon, which is what Michael Jackson was, despite the bad press and bad image he suffered late in his career. Set to do a 50-show world tour, Michael was in Los Angeles preparing for his highly anticipated, sold-out tour when he suffered heart failure and was rushed to the hospital where the emergency team tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him. Michael's contribution to the music goes unmatched by any other black musician as he broke the barrier for universal appeal and became a prolific song writer and unmatched stage presence. Just a quick mention of a few upcoming videos that should be on your list, Adventureland is quirky a little rom-com starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart with help from SNL comedians Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader. Sunshine Cleaning is a slightly off-beat comedy starring the always impressive Amy Adams as an ex-cheerleader, cum housemaid, who makes a go at taking control of her life with her family in tow. In the foreign language category, I'm torn between Big Man Japan, a "wickedly deadpan spin on the giant Japanese superhero," and The Class, a little French drama based on the novel by and starring François Bégaudeau. Kids will enjoy Sid the Science Kid, an inquisitive preschooler who, along with the help of his classmates, teacher, and family, tackles basic scientific principals, educating viewers on the way things work. Now, in the nonfiction category I have to mention Disneynature's Earth--reminiscent of Walt Disney's True Life Adventures--and finally Tyson, acclaimed indie director James Toback's stylistically inventive portrait of a mesmerizing Mike Tyson. Happy viewing, listening and playing! All of these titles and many more are included in our monthly Video News newsletter. To view the complete listing of the latest titles in Video News, click here.
