CLOSE TO SHORE: The Terrifying Shark Attacks of 1916
Adapted for Young People by Michael Capuzzo
Audio Bookshelf
Unabridged on 3 CDs
The first two weeks of July, 1916, brought terror to the residents of the New Jersey coast. Over a period of 12 days, a series of unprovoked shark attacks occurred in less than 20 feet of water--resulting in the deaths of four people and the serious injury of another. It is believed that the same shark, a great white, was responsible for all five attacks. (This is the same series of attacks that inspired Peter Benchley's novel Jaws.)
At the beginning of the 20th century, it was thought (by scientists and lay people alike) that the sharks that came near the shore were harmless, they did not attack humans, and they certainly did not eat human flesh. The attacks of 1916 changed this view and helped to create the idea of a rogue shark: a shark that pursues humans for food and displays unusually aggressive behavior.
Close to Shore is the terrifying story of what the residents of the Jersey shore went through that summer. It is a glimpse into the myths that existed about sharks and it is an amazing story, made even more so by the terrific narration of Taylor Mali. Perfect for a young adult audience, this audiobook is sure to lure in the most reluctant reader.--Linda Arrington Lusk
