Do You! 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success
by Russell Simmons with Chris Morrow
read by Black Ice
Penguin Audiobooks

It's complete serendipity that I listened to this audiobook. It's not one that I would have chosen for myself, but once I began listening to it, I couldn't stop. I'm not of the Hip-Hop generation; to be honest, I had never taken notice of Russell Simmons, Def Jam Records, Phat Farm, or Def Comedy Jam. I was completely amazed by this audiobook.

Black Ice does an excellent job of narration. His voice is pleasant to hear and he uses it well. Russell Simmons reads his introduction and does a fine and passionate job of it. He clearly feels strongly about the content of this audiobook and wants the message to get to his listeners.

The message is not the usual business advice. Sure, there are some tips on how to behave in certain situations so you don't look foolish. Understanding relationships with other business people is important. There are some examples of Simmons' own journey to success and advice on how to handle that success. But the main message is one that I find compelling: Do You! In other words, think for yourself and don't compromise your principles. Learn to think right, find your own motivation, get to know the right people, and appreciate hard work. Remember that you are part of the world and you give value first in order to find lasting success. This is an inspiring audiobook that transcends age, race, and background. It should be on the shelf of every public library.--Norma Lilly
