In May 2008, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that the nation's Hispanic population had increased by 1.4 million to reach 45.5 million on July 1, 2007--an increase to 15.1 percent of the estimated total U.S. population of 301.6 million. As immigrants arrive to the U.S. from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Central America, and South America, they bring with them a rich and varied culture.
