Summer Reading |
 |
No doubt summer is a kid’s favorite time of year (next to the holidays, of course)—the time when school is out and carefree, fun days are the only items on their schedule.
However, today’s summer breaks incorporate more than going to the movies or lounging by the pool. Many students are required to spend their summer breaks reading a certain number of books before the next school year begins.
You can utilize your library’s Summer Reading Program to introduce youngsters to a variety of authors who may appear on their summer reading lists—from classic storytellers like William Shakespeare, Robert Lewis Stevenson, and Mark Twain; to such 20th-century icons as L. Frank Baum, J.R.R. Tolkein, and Jack London; to today’s popular and award-winning authors including Kate DiCamillo, Caroline B. Cooney, and Lois Lowry.
You can also encourage a child’s love of reading by making available the latest works by many of their favorite authors, including Avi, who delivers the final book in his popular Poppy series this summer, and D.J. MacHale, whose Pendragon series has captured the hearts of young readers of all ages. Also, the “blockbusters” of the book world like the Harry Potter books or Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series continue to be popular choices for leisurely reading.
So when students come to you looking for the titles on their required list, be ready to share your enthusiasm for reading these kinds of books with them and encourage them to develop a love for reading.
